A quick guide to Windows 2008 Hyper-V

January 27, 2010

The Windows 2008 Hyper V Server is in the RTM process. There is a beta of Hyper-V inside. We will provide you a sneak peek at Hyper-V, which we envision to create a whole new wave of applications.

The hypervisor has a catchy and cool name. The name sounds like straight from a sci-fi movie.  It does of course refer to the new thin layer that is installed on Windows 2008 Hyper V Server. It’s also a term used industry wide so when you hear the term, it doesn’t just refer to the Microsoft implementation.

The hypervisor, code named “Viridian” and now called Hyper-V, is an installable Windows Server 2008 role. You can immediately install one of more child partitions after installing the role, which you can then run to your virtualized workloads. It is very easy to install these applications, although you need to learn some things to do it properly.

Virtual machine additions

In order to use the new high speed VMBUS, you’ll want to uninstall any previous additions from Virtual PC or Virtual Server, then install the integration components for Hyper-V.The developers of the new product wanted to make the transition smoothly, but currently, users have to do it by manual application.

Snapshots

You’ll notice when you start looking at the CTP, that there is an added ability to take snapshots of your virtual machines in either an online or offline state.Although not yet available, this will give you an opporutnity to assess the incoming VSS capabilities. This is going to offer much more flexibility in your high availability and disaster recovery planning.

Management tools

The management console is shipped with a Windows 2008 Hyper-V.  However, the strategy is to take advantage of the System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 product for advanced management of the virtualization partitions, VM workloads, monitoring, reporting, resource assignments, etc.You will be surprised at the number of benefits you will get from this program.
